Background of the Study
Radio has long been recognized as an important tool for promoting education and literacy, especially in regions where access to formal education is limited. In Nguru Local Government Area (LGA), Yobe State, radio has become a key medium for disseminating educational content, particularly for women, who often face cultural and logistical barriers to accessing education (Adamu & Ibrahim, 2023). Educational radio programs designed specifically for women are increasingly being used to teach basic literacy skills, numeracy, and other essential knowledge that can empower women and improve their socio-economic status. These programs are especially important in rural areas, where radio is one of the most accessible media platforms. This study seeks to explore the impact of radio programs on enhancing literacy among women in Nguru LGA, focusing on how these programs contribute to women's educational empowerment.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While radio has been recognized as a useful tool for promoting literacy, there is limited research on its impact specifically on women's literacy in Nguru LGA, Yobe State. Women in this region often encounter educational disadvantages due to cultural norms, gender disparities, and limited access to schools. Although radio programs have been implemented to enhance literacy, the effectiveness of these programs in empowering women and improving their literacy levels has not been adequately studied. This research seeks to explore whether radio programs can successfully enhance literacy among women in Nguru LGA, and what factors contribute to their effectiveness.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the role of radio in enhancing literacy among women in Nguru LGA.
To evaluate the impact of educational radio programs on women’s literacy levels in Nguru LGA.
To identify the challenges and opportunities in using radio as a tool for women’s education in Nguru LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
How does radio contribute to enhancing literacy among women in Nguru LGA?
To what extent have radio programs improved literacy levels among women in Nguru LGA?
What factors influence the effectiveness of radio programs in enhancing literacy among women in Nguru LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Radio programs have a positive impact on enhancing literacy among women in Nguru LGA.
Educational radio programs have significantly improved literacy levels among women in Nguru LGA.
The effectiveness of radio programs in enhancing literacy is influenced by factors such as program content, accessibility, and listener engagement.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a better understanding of how radio can be used to enhance literacy among women in rural Nigeria. The findings will be valuable to policymakers, educators, and media practitioners working to promote women’s education and literacy. The results may also help inform the design of future educational programs aimed at empowering women in remote communities.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the role of radio in enhancing literacy among women in Nguru LGA, Yobe State. It will not include other media forms or explore broader educational issues. The study’s findings will be limited to women who have been exposed to educational radio programs.
